This instrument appears to work as follows:

To measure colony size or extent of a lytic zone. The zone on the plate is visible as projected onto the screen by the light source. If the zone is centered at the cross hairs and the counter is then zeroed, moving the plate transport mechanism by the crank on the side of the instrument until the edge of the zone is at the cross hairs will give a distance (radius) measurement in the counter window. Diameters could likewise be measured from edge to edge alignment in the cross hairs.

• washing steps for assays involving precipitation of radiolabeled substrates onto filters anchored in arrayed chambers
